In this article, JTC Americas, which administers the JTC Impact Medallion Program in which LCR Capital Partners takes part, interviews John Baker, LCR’s marketing director, about recent developments in the EB-5 immigrant investor program. Baker discusses how the pandemic has increased people’s need for security and access to top-notch health care, and the ways this recent crisis has increased the value of global mobility, especially mobility to countries like the US that have excellent health care systems. He explains the improvements that the EB-5 Reform and Integrity Act of 2022 has brought to the EB-5 program, including increased transparency and greater protection against fraud. He also explains the differences between indirect (regional center) and direct EB-5 projects, including differences in returns and investors’ degree of control over the business. Another topic he addresses is the necessity for investors to ensure that the advisors and firms to which they entrust their EB-5 journey are expert, honest, and SEC-compliant. He also notes that certain other countries with immigrant investor programs that LCR works with, such as Portugal, are committed to their visa programs—an important point when investors are seeking financial and lifestyle security.
