Gearing up to build a global investment portfolio – options, regulations & best practices

In this followup to her December 16 article, Shilpa Menon discusses some specifics of making international investments. For example, investors should think about whether their intent is to diversify their portfolio or to build a foreign currency nest egg for the future. If they seek just diversification, they may be able to use basic mobile investment apps to invest in domestic “feeder funds” that give them international exposure to simple investments in the S&P 500 or NASDAQ indices or in foreign mutual funds, without their having to set up foreign brokerage accounts or remit funds overseas. But these feeder funds do nothing to develop a nest egg of foreign currency. This article spells out how Indian investors can invest overseas safely and in compliance with Indian laws.
